Trends at the checkout: spotlight on energy consumption

The retail sector never stands still. Changes within the market have been hard to keep up with over the past few years, and anyone who wants to stay ahead of the competition will have to actively respond to the latest trends. And there is still a lot of ground to be gained, especially in the field of energy consumption. Where and how? Let’s discuss the most important trends and their challenges below.

Finding new ways to save energy

From transport, production to daily operations, everything is getting more and more expensive, and this is expected to continue for some time. This requires action, or rather, finding new ways to save money. Starting with tackling the checkout. "In many cases, the external devices used at checkout such as the printer and scanner are powered separately. As a result, they consume unnecessary power", says Didier Ladegaillerie, Product Manager at Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions. "By simplifying the way checkout systems are put together in-store, connecting peripheral devices to one power point, you ensure that not only the checkout system itself, but also the devices connect to it, no longer consume additional power unnecessarily. The next step is to activate the systems deep sleep mode, which will automatically power down the checkout system when it is not in use.

Technological developments

Some technological developments are also making saving energy at checkout a lot easier. Thanks in part to improved designs of processors and other embedded components, checkouts work much more efficiently, which means less power is consumed. These investments are where the benefits can be reaped quickly. "We see older systems are still being used in many retailers store estates, quietly guzzling a lot of energy. So, it’s worth looking at the hardware in use, especially when you have a lot of checkouts installed. And with the savings on offer, within 10 years, you could recover your investment quite easily”, says Ladegaillerie.

Digitalisation

Despite the growth of online shopping, the physical retail store is also undergoing a lot of digitisation too. From self-scanning checkouts and contactless payments to up-to-date price information on digital shelf tags, for more and more stores within the retail sector, this is part of today's new normal. And after all, consumers are more likely to return when they are treated to an optimal, personalised customer experience. "A good example of that personalisation is the question consumers are asked at the end of the self-scanning process: do you want the receipt to be long, short or digital?" explains Meike Marquardt, Head of Marketing in Europe at Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions. By offering customers this simple choice, not only ensures a more personalised experience, but also saves retailers energy when customers choose a short or digital receipt. In addition, it helps gets customers though the store more quickly, which is positive from a customer experience perspective, as they can spend less time queuing.

Latest Trends

Sustainability

"In recent years, retailers have been stepping up their efforts to create a better, more sustainable world”, says Ladegaillerie. From recycling and packaging materials to sustainable partnerships, everything is being considered. Not necessarily because retailers themselves think this is important, but because consumers increasingly see this as an important topic. "This is being actively addressed, especially by retail marketeers, who want to make sure what they do is visible to their customers. For example, this starts with showing sustainability scores on products and ends with communicating about it on social media. But, of course, you can just start with something as simple as offering the choice of a digital or shorter receipt”, says Marquardt. “At Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, we offer solutions to make checkouts more sustainable. Not only with the visible part for consumers, but also the important hidden parts, such as re-wiring the peripheral devices of a checkout system, which is often overlooked.”
